Good laws never result from mass hysteria

One of the pitfalls of living in what many call a "democracy," which according to our Founders is an erroneous way to describe our form of government, is the tendency of opportunists to use the mass hysteria among the populace to garner support for bad laws.

The case of the Salem Witch Trials is a perfect example of such hysteria. Some of the more astute minds of the period were so caught up in the hysteria stemming from the claims of a few silly school girls that a number of admirable, upstanding members of the community were sentenced to death.

Contrary to the notion that society has advanced far beyond such primitive thinking, modern 21st century societies have their own versions of mass hysteria that are rarely based on logical thinking but on knee-jerk reactions to frightening events.

Gun hysteria is case in point...

The healthcare problem no one wants to discuss

Contrary to the meme promulgated by the Obama administration and Democrats in Congress, healthcare costs will not decrease due to the implementation of what is known as Obamacare. Rather, the program will do the exact thing that its proponents claim it was supposed to prevent.

Healthcare costs will skyrocket under Obamacare.

A preliminary report issued in February indicated that under the new Obamacare law a health insurance policy for a family of four will cost a whopping $20,000 per year.

Thus, the core motivation for implementing the healthcare law, if one listens to the politicians, was a false one....

Traction Control points to what he says is the best article on ARs he's ever read. Now, there is much to be said for the AR. It's lightweight, it has very little recoil, and easy to use. But it is not my preference. I prefer a semiautomatic shotgun. Just a matter of personal preference.

Shouting match erupts in Senate hearing on gun ban

During a scheduled hearing today of the Senate Judiciary Committee, senators clashed over the proposal of U.S. Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., that would ban hundreds of types of firearms, including the popular AR-15 rifle and semiautomatic handguns.

The bill would also ban magazines that hold more than 10 rounds of ammunition.

The Democrat-controlled Senate apparently made sure that the room where the hearing was held was packed with supporters of the gun ban. Attendees cheered witnesses who testified in favor of the ban, particularly when they clashed with Republicans on the committee.

Feinstein gun ban to be heard by committee tomorrow

The Feinstein gun ban bill, commonly known for the person who introduced the bill to the Senate, U.S. Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., will be considered by the Senate Judiciary Committee tomorrow at 10 a.m. EST.

Conservative groups have contacted their members and constituents to urge them contact the senators on the committee, especially those who are up for reelection in 2014, to urge them to take no action on the proposal, effectively allowing the bill to die in committee.

News outlet uses pro-gun rally to promote anti-gun rally

Excerpt...

"WSPA reported on the National Day of Resistance Saturday evening in its 11 p.m. news broadcast. But in doing so it spent as much if not more time talking about an anti-gun rally that is scheduled for the following week than reporting on the pro-gun event itself. The organizer for the anti-gun rally was given an extensive interview.

"One is led to wonder why such obvious bias is incorporated into a news segment about pro-gun activists, particularly in a state where firearms rights are valued. Not only that, but one wonders why an avid anti-gun group would be given such free publicity in a news segment that was supposed to be about a pro-gun rally."

'Well regulated militia' does not mean gun control

Common errors in thinking have characterized the argument among progressives that the term "well regulated militia" as contained in the Second Amendment to the U.S. Constitution mandates national gun control laws and various restrictions.

Such thinking, however, cannot be verified by the historical record.

How do we know that this is the case? How can we be certain that the Framers did not wish to impose cumbersome national gun restrictions and controls on the firearms rights of the citizens?

The text itself, understood within its historical context and the philosophy and written explanations of the Framers themselves, provides the answers.
